US Manufacturing: Industry in Peril
...There is increasing recognition that, as a nation, we must become more of a manufacturer, not just a consumer, of goods. Not solely for the sake of patriotism, i.e. “Buy American”, but because of economic necessity. The idea that America can compete in the world only as a “service economy” is a myth. Likewise, the idea that the US is building primarily a “knowledge based” economy to capitalize on our innovations is also a myth. We’re starting to understand why. The manufacture of goods is a critical piece of the economic puzzle because it is the only way to create the volume of jobs the US economy needs while simultaneously mitigating market risks. The impact is much larger than most economists first imagined. More>
